A powerful tragedy distilled into a jewel of a masterpiece by the Nobel Prize--winning author of Beloved and, almost like a prelude to that story, set two centuries earlier. In the 1680s the slave trade was still in its infancy. In the Americas, virulent religious and class divisions, prejudice and oppression were rife, providing the fertile soil in which slavery and race hatred were planted and took root.Jacob is an Anglo-Dutch trader and adventurer, with a small holding in the harsh north. Despite his distaste for dealing in "flesh," he takes a small slave girl in part payment for a bad debt from a plantation owner in Catholic Maryland. This is Florens, "with the hands of a slave and the feet of a Portuguese lady." Florens looks for love, first from Lina, an older servant woman at her new master's house, but later from a handsome blacksmith, an African, never enslaved. There are other voices: Lina, whose tribe was decimated by smallpox; their mistress, Rebekka, herself a victim of religious intolerance back in England; Sorrow, a strange girl who's spent her early years at sea; and finally the devastating voice of Florens' mother. These are all men and women inventing themselves in the wilderness.A Mercy reveals what lies beneath the surface of slavery. But at its heart it is the ambivalent, disturbing story of a mother who casts off her daughter in order to save her, and of a daughter who may never exorcise that abandonment.Acts of mercy may have unforeseen consequences. From the Hardcover edition.

African American fiction was profoundly transformed by deep examinations of history, community, and identity in seminal works such as Beloved and The Bluest Eye. Toni Morrison brought these narratives to life through an epic structural scope, an unerring ear for dialogue, and a deeply expressive prose style.
Born Chloe Anthony Wofford in 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, she was the second of four children in a Black working-class family and displayed an early passion for literature. She studied humanities at Howard University and American literature at Cornell University before establishing an academic career that included teaching positions at Texas Southern University, Howard University, Yale, and holding a chair at Princeton University starting in 1989. Alongside her teaching, Morrison served as a senior editor for Random House, worked as a critic, and gave public lectures specializing in African American literature. She made her debut as a novelist in 1970 with The Bluest Eye, earning widespread attention for her storytelling and literary vision. Named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1981, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for Beloved and became the first Black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993. Her career and literary record were documented in compiled proceedings such as Nobel Lectures, Literature 1991-1995, published in 1997.
Morrison's writing is celebrated for its poetic language, complex characters, and rigorous examination of the Black experience, especially the lives of Black women. Her novels combine mythic symbolism, non-linear timelines, and historical realism to examine how systemic trauma and personal memory intersect. Beyond her fiction, her critical essays and commentary examined cultural representation, canon formation, and the power of language in shaping historical narrative.
