He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Georgetown University in 1950 and completed his master's degree in English literature at George Washington University in 1954. Before achieving commercial success as an author, Blatty worked in various occupations, serving as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman, a beer truck driver for the Gunther Brewing Company, and an editor and policy officer for the United States Information Agency in Beirut.

Blatty transitioned to full-time writing during the 1960s, initially publishing comedic novels and screenplays before turning to religious thriller themes. The release of The Exorcist in 1971 expanded his career into film directing and production, where he helmed feature adaptations of his novels, including The Ninth Configuration in 1980 and The Exorcist III in 1990. In his later years, Blatty published non-fiction works such as the 2015 memoir Finding Peter, which reflected on faith and life after death following the 2006 passing of his son. Blatty lived in Bethesda, Maryland, until his death on January 12, 2017.
