Sara Shepard

Mystery and suspense novels for young adults reached widespread popularity with the release of the Pretty Little Liars book series. Author Sara Shepard established a prominent presence in modern mystery fiction by crafting multi-layered narrative puzzles set in affluent suburban communities.

Her work sparked a major media franchise and inspired hit television adaptations on Freeform, bringing her signature blend of high school drama and psychological suspense to screen audiences worldwide.

Career & Background

Born on April 8, 1977, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sara Shepard grew up in the Main Line region outside Philadelphia, an environment that served as the primary geographical and social inspiration for her mystery fiction. She earned a Bachelor of Science from New York University and later completed a Master of Fine Arts at Brooklyn College.

Shepard published her debut novel in 2006, initiating the long-running Pretty Little Liars series. Over the following decade and a half, she authored nearly forty novels. Her bibliography includes popular young adult series such as The Lying Game, The Perfectionists, and The Heiresses, as well as standalone works and adult thrillers including All the Things We Didn't Say and Nowhere Like Home.

Writing Style & Themes

Shepard's writing style is defined by brisk pacing, dramatic twists, and close attention to social hierarchies. Her plots frequently revolve around groups of young women who are haunted by shared secrets, former misdeeds, and anonymous stalkers who threaten to expose their private lives.

Drawing directly from her upbringing in suburban Pennsylvania, she uses insular, wealthy communities as backdrops for stories exploring betrayal, trust, and guilt. This focus on suspenseful interpersonal drama made her works prime candidates for television, with both Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game successfully adapted for television.
