Born Ryan Clark Holiday on June 16, 1987, in Sacramento County, California, Holiday attended the University of California, Riverside before dropping out at age nineteen to apprentice under Robert Greene, the author of The 48 Laws of Power. He subsequently pursued a marketing career, serving as the director of marketing for American Apparel and handling high-profile promotional campaigns.

Holiday later founded Brass Check, a creative advisory firm that advised clients such as Google, TASER, and Complex, as well as authors including Tim Ferriss, Tony Robbins, and Neil Strauss. After establishing his presence in media strategy with his 2012 book Trust Me, I'm Lying, Holiday turned his primary focus to writing, podcasting, and public philosophy. In addition to writing, he owns and operates The Painted Porch, an independent bookstore on Main Street in Bastrop, Texas, and resides outside Austin.
