Career & Background

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929, Juster was the son of an architect and studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Liverpool. After serving three years in the U.S. Navy, he began working as an architect in New York before moving his practice to Western Massachusetts. His architectural work included collaborating on the design of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, educational and cultural projects throughout New England, and developments for Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. In addition to his design firm, Juster taught architecture and planning at the Pratt Institute and was professor emeritus of design at Hampshire College. An amateur cook and self-described professional eater, he lived in Amherst, Massachusetts, with his wife until his death in 2021.
