Career & Background
Maia Kobabe is a nonbinary, trans, and queer author and illustrator based in the Bay Area, California. A voracious reader, K-pop fan, and daydreamer, Kobabe worked in libraries for over ten years before transitioning to full-time freelance writing and illustration. E earned a Master of Fine Arts in Comics from California College of the Arts in 2015. Eir first full-length book, Gender Queer: A Memoir, was published in 2019 by Lion Forge Comics. The graphic novel received critical recognition, winning an Alex Award and a Stonewall Honor from the American Library Association in 2020, while also earning nominations for an Ignatz Award and YALSA's Best Graphic Novels for Teens list.
Following its release, Gender Queer: A Memoir became the number one most challenged and banned book in the United States in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Beyond eir debut graphic novel, Kobabe has contributed short comics and writing to outlets such as The New Yorker, The Nib, NPR, Time Magazine, and The Washington Post, as well as print anthologies including Be Gay, Do Comics, The Secret Loves of Geeks, Faster Than Light Y'all, Gothic Tales of Haunted Love, Shout Out, and Advanced Death Saves. Kobabe co-authored Breathe: Journeys to Healthy Binding with Dr. Sarah Peitzmeier, published by Dutton in 2024. E is also working with Lucky Srikumar on a middle-grade graphic novel, Saachi's Stories, scheduled for release by Scholastic Graphix in 2026.
