Career & Background
Cashore was born in 1976 and grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania as the second of four daughters, spending her childhood reading constantly. She earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College before completing her master's degree at the Center for the Study of Children's Literature at Simmons College, where she worked with Liza Ketchum and was named a Virginia Haviland Scholar. Prior to writing novels, she held a variety of jobs, working as a dog runner, a candy factory packer, an editorial assistant, and a legal assistant. She also worked as a freelance educational writer creating textbook content and teacher editions, while contributing book reviews to publications such as The Horn Book Guide. Throughout her life, Cashore lived in numerous locations, including Pennsylvania, Florida (including Jacksonville), Sydney, Boston, Cambridge, Austin, New York City, London, and Italy, before settling in the Boston area.
In 2008, Cashore made her novelistic debut with Graceling, initiating her career as a full-time fantasy writer and laying the foundation for the Graceling Realm series. Over the following years, she expanded her storytelling into new structural forms with the multi-genre speculative novel Jane, Unlimited and the contemporary magical realist novel There Is a Door in This Darkness.
