J.S. Dewes

High-stakes space opera and action-driven military science fiction form the core of speculative sagas that thrust disparate crews into battle against existential cosmic threats. Author J.S. Dewes entered the science fiction landscape with high-octane narrative pacing and intricate world-building, capturing widespread attention with her debut space opera saga, The Divide.

Her multi-book series and standalone space operas combine cinematic narrative momentum with character-focused military sci-fi, establishing her as a compelling voice in contemporary speculative fiction.

Career & Background

Before publishing science fiction novels, Dewes earned a degree in film production and built a creative career across multiple visual media. She served as a cinematographer for independent films, wrote and edited scripts for award-winning feature films and shorts, and produced and shot an independent zombie musical. Transitioning her narrative skills into interactive media, she expanded into video game development, writing triple-A science fiction video games as a narrative designer at Humanoid Games.

Dewes launched her novelistic career in April 2021 with Tor Books, releasing her debut space opera novel The Last Watch. The novel was selected as a most-anticipated release by outlets such as SFF 180, Nerd Daily, Geek Tyrant, and Bookish. She rapidly expanded the universe of The Divide with its sequel The Exiled Fleet in August 2021—which earned praise from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal—followed by the third installment, The Relentless Legion. In March 2023, Tor published her standalone military science fiction novel Rubicon.

Writing Style & Themes

Dewes's background in film production and screenwriting deeply influences her writing style, which features fast-paced visual staging, rapid scene cuts, and kinetic action sequences. Her fiction frequently explores themes of military camaraderie, survival against impossible odds, duty, and resilience under extreme pressure at the edge of known space. Drawing on her expertise in both filmmaking and video game narrative design, she balances grand galactic stakes with tight, character-driven arcs.
