Career & Background

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1973, Diaz fled with his family to Sweden at age two following the 1976 military coup, returning to Argentina seven years later when democracy was restored. He pursued higher education at the University of Buenos Aires, earned a master's degree at King's College London, and completed a PhD in comparative literature at New York University. Prior to releasing his fiction, he worked as a professor, academic editor, and associate director of the Hispanic Institute at Columbia University, and published the academic monograph Borges, between History and Eternity.

Diaz published his debut novel, In the Distance, in 2017 at age 44. The revisionist western follows a Swedish emigrant navigating the nineteenth-century American frontier and became a finalist for both the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His second novel, Trust (2022), earned the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, was longlisted for the Booker Prize, and was named one of the New York Times 100 Best Books of the Century. His honors include a Whiting Award and the John Updike Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, and his writings have been translated into thirty-seven languages.
