Born on May 14, 1965, in Wexford, Ireland, Colfer grew up as the second of five boys in a family deeply connected to the arts; his father Billy was an elementary school teacher, historian, and artist, while his mother was a drama teacher. After earning his degree from Dublin University, he pursued teaching and worked as a primary school teacher.
