Born on May 14, 1965, in Wexford, Ireland, Colfer grew up as the second of five boys in a family deeply connected to the arts; his father Billy was an elementary school teacher, historian, and artist, while his mother was a drama teacher. He first developed an interest in writing during primary school, crafting Viking stories inspired by his history lessons. After earning his degree from Dublin University, he pursued teaching and worked as a primary school teacher. Between 1992 and 1996, Colfer and his wife spent four years working abroad in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Europe. His background in education and international living shaped his early storytelling before he became a full-time writer following the massive success of Artemis Fowl.
