Born on February 7, 1974, in Elmira, New York, Emma McLaughlin attended New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. While balancing her studies and working as a nanny in Manhattan, she met fellow student and childcare worker Nicola Kraus. Drawing directly on their shared experiences in upper-echelon households, the pair wrote their breakout debut novel, The Nanny Diaries, published in 2002.
