Eleanor Catton

Also known as Ellie Catton, Eleanor Catton MNZM

Historical fiction and suspenseful mystery intersect in complex literary structures that test the boundaries of narrative form. The Victorian-era mystery novel The Luminaries earned wide international recognition for its intricate plotting aligned with astrological charts, establishing its author as one of contemporary fiction's most distinctive craftspeople. Eleanor Catton, a New Zealand novelist and screenwriter born in 1985, became the youngest recipient in the history of the Man Booker Prize when she won the award for the book in 2013.

Career & Background

Born in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1985, Catton moved to New Zealand during childhood and grew up in Christchurch. She completed a master's degree in creative writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington and later earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Her debut novel, The Rehearsal, originated as her master's thesis and was published in 2008. The book won the Betty Trask Award, the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, and the New Zealand Society of Authors' Best First Book Award, while also being shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize before its adaptation into a 2016 feature film.

Catton achieved widespread acclaim with her second novel, The Luminaries, published in 2013. Set during the 1860s West Coast Gold Rush in New Zealand, the epic novel won the 2013 Man Booker Prize and the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction. At age 28, Catton was the youngest author ever to win the Booker Prize and only the second New Zealander to receive the honor. In addition to her novels, Catton has established a screenwriting career, adapting The Luminaries into a television miniseries and writing the screenplay for the 2020 feature film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. She was named a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) and currently lives in Cambridge, England.

Writing Style & Themes

Catton's narrative technique is distinguished by ambitious structural design, psychological acuity, and precise social observation. In The Luminaries, she constructed twelve narrative sections modeled on celestial mechanics and astrological charts, pairing formal constraint with nineteenth-century sensational fiction tropes. Across her novels, including The Rehearsal and her 2023 eco-thriller Birnam Wood, Catton explores performance, moral complicity, self-deception, and the friction between individual desire and social institutions.

The book: The Luminaries (2013)

Winner of the Man Booker Prize of 2013. Wonderful novel taking place in New-Zealand during the golden rush. Une intrigue complexe et fine à la fois, vrai roman d'aventure historique mais pas seulement.
