Career & Background

Diana Jean Gabaldon Watkins was born in Williams, Arizona, and grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, coming from a family of Mexican-American and English heritage. Prior to becoming a full-time novelist, she established a career in scientific research and academia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Science in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, and a Ph.D. in Quantitative Behavioral Ecology from Northern Arizona University. In addition to her university teaching, she authored technical articles, software reviews, and comic book scripts for Disney's Scrooge McDuck.

Gabaldon began writing her debut novel in 1989 as a practice exercise to learn how to write a book, drawing inspiration for the 18th-century Scottish setting from an episode of Doctor Who. Published in 1991, Outlander launched a major book series that has expanded into numerous main-sequence novels, companion volumes, and spin-off works.
