Darren O'Shaughnessy was born on July 2, 1972, at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, England, to Irish parents Liam and Breda O'Shaughnessy. He spent his early childhood in South East London before moving at age six to Limerick, Ireland, where he was raised and attended primary school in Askeaton. O'Shaughnessy developed an early enthusiasm for writing, completing his first full-length novel at seventeen before pursuing higher education at the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education, where he earned a B.Sc. degree. He initially published fiction for adults under his legal name before adopting the pseudonym Darren Shan to publish children's dark fantasy and horror.
Following the breakout success of The Saga of Darren Shan, he expanded his literary output across multiple multi-volume series and stand-alone novels. His major series include The Demonata, a ten-book dark fantasy saga involving demonic invasions, and The Saga of Larten Crepsley, a four-book prequel series published between 2010 and 2012 focusing on the backstory of his famous vampire mentor.
