Career & Background

Born on August 16, 1954, in Doña Ana County near Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sáenz was raised on a small farm in Old Picacho. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Philosophy from St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado, in 1977, studied theology at the University of Louvain in Belgium, and served as a Catholic priest in El Paso, Texas, before leaving the priesthood in 1985 to pursue writing. He subsequently earned a Master of Arts in creative writing from the University of Texas at El Paso, where he later joined the faculty to teach creative writing. After 15 years of marriage to an El Paso family court judge, Sáenz came out as gay at age 54, and the couple filed for divorce in 2009; he has frequently spoken about writing as a central medium for processing long-standing personal struggles. In 2013, Sáenz became the first Latino writer to win the PEN/Faulkner Book Award for Fiction for his short story collection Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club. On October 29, 2022, he was honored with the inaugural Hummingbird Award in Literary Arts by the Tulsa City-County Library and the Hispanic Resource Center.
